Liz Harris
I have had dogs in my family most of my life.
My earliest memory of a dog is Honey Child
a golden Cocker Spaniel. I lived on a farm
and my only playmates were the animals
on the farm. I was about 3 or 4 when Honey
Child let me dress her up in my doll clothes.
I can still picture her lying on her back
with her front paws up with my doll dresses
and bonnets on. What a sweet dog for a
child to have in her life!
In
addition to the Cockers, I have had 2 Doxies,
a playful Beagle, a noisy Basset
called Solow because she was so low, a gentle
German Shepard and a darling mutt called
Sugar. Now I have a very sweet little girl,
Schautzie. She is a mini Schnauzer. We rescued
each other when she was 3 ½. She was
not socialized at all when I got her. Now
she comes to the lodge with me and has learned
to be our greeter. Of course she is not spoiled
at all, but you will notice when you come
to the lodge that she has her own armchair!
Oh my gosh! Her greatest joy is to go for
long walks where her sniffer get a good work
out! She is always on the lookout for a squirrel
to tree, a bird to chase or another dog to
greet. As with all of us who love our dogs,
she brings joy to my life.

Solow was my dog as a kid. My Mom didn’t
know it at the time but my best friend Tammy
and I used to run through the house to get
Solow to start barking (it wasn’t a
hard thing to do) and then jump on her bed.
Solow couldn’t jump that high on her
short legs so she would bark all the harder
and louder which made us laugh and squeal!
Now
I have a beautiful dog, Zoë. She
is a mix and the mix turned out right. She
is very smart! I’ve taught her lots
of tricks and commands and to climb a stepladder.
She is a happy exuberant dog that makes me
laugh every day! Zoë is very inquisitive
and she also loves to go for long walks.
We hit the forest trails, Zoë on the
hunt for a lizard. One day she will catch
one, and then what will I do? Zoë loves
toys and recognizes a Kmart bag hoping that
there is a new toy in the bag for her! She
is a delight
Robert
Harris’ Suzie
Suzie was a Samoid who adopted the Harris
family when Robert was a kid. They lived
in the Twin Peaks area of San Francisco.
She was a very cleaver dog! One morning
when Dad opened the door to retrieve his
newspaper, he was surprised to see a dog,
soon to be named Suzie, sitting up on the
porch with the newspaper in her mouth.
She was invited in and decided to stay.
Soon the whole family loved her, as she
was a fun smart dog. Then one day she was
gone! The kids were heartsick! Happily
in a few days she returned…with garlic
on her breath! Thereafter, she disappeared
for several days every few weeks always
returning with garlic on her breath!
